Interview With Hephaestus

Bella Dionne • March 5, 2018

This year, the ATC is conducting interviews with all the deities whom will be attending this year's Spring Mysteries Festival. Included below are a couple questions that Hephaestus and his priest have kindly answered for us.

1. What is your deities name(s), and what concepts of the human condition do they represent?

He is Hephaestus. He represents attention to detail, creativity, perspective, creation, and understanding.

2. Give a brief description of your god's backstory. How were they born/created? Who are they married to?

Hephaestus was born of Zeus and Hera, though Hesiod says He was born of only Hera. When She saw Him to be ugly and imperfect She threw Him from Mount Olympus. After falling for a full day, he landed within Mount Aetna. It is here that He forges all of the wares of the gods with the Cyclopes. He was husband to Aphrodite, though later weds Aglaia.

3. What is something about your deity that most people don't know?

Most people assume that Hephaestus is only the God of blacksmiths, but this is a misconception. He truly feels father to anyone to creates and crafts. Every artisan who gives love and soul to their craft is His child.

4. What's something unique you've learned from working with them this year?

I have learned true appreciation for the many creative abilities I have, including a few crafty abilities I didn't know I was rather good at.

5. If you were to spend a day with your deity, what activities would do? How would they react to those mortal activities?

Crafting, tinkering, building, perfecting; making and making all manner of things that we could. I think He would be amused compared to the scope of His creations, but simultaneously would be proud and impressed at the dedication to the crafts.
