Interview With Hermes

Bella Dionne • March 10, 2018

1. What is your deity's name, and what concepts of the human condition do they represent?

He is Hermes, or Mercury. Hermes represents cunning, wealth, luck, and fertility.

2. Give a brief description of your god's backstory. How were they born/created? Who are they married to?

Hermes is the son of Zeus and Maia, one of the Pleiades, and the daughter of Atlas. He isn't married as far as I've been able to tell, but he is the father of Pan.

3. What is something about your deity that most people don't know?

Something most people don't know about Hermes is that, along with all the other roles he holds within the Greek Pantheon, he is also a god of spiders. This makes a lot of sense if you think of all the metaphorical webs that he deals with (roads, the internet, etc.)

4. What's something unique you've learned from working with them this year?

Something Hermes has basically been working to pound into my head from day one is the idea that if you want something, you need to go out and take it. Given that he is the god of thieves, this isn't a surprising concept, but what has surprised me is the extent to which he has asked me to apply it. You want a better job? Get out there and find one. You want love and affection? Go find it, it's out there. You want happiness? Get out there and carve it from the fabric of reality itself if you have to. Have you tried to get the thing that you want but it hasn't worked? Clearly you haven't found what you really want, so keep looking.

5. If you were to spend a day with your deity, what activities would do? How would they react to those mortal activities?

If I were to spend the day with Hermes, I'd probably end up taking him on a road trip. We would probably either just get in the car, pick a direction, and drive until we found something interesting enough to stop for, or make our way through as many hole in the wall "hidden gem" barbecue restaurants as we can find.
