INDEX, WA – The Woolston-Steen Theological Seminary (WSTS), also known as WiccanSeminary.EDU, has hired its first ever full-time, paid employee. Kara D Williams is a Third Degree Wiccan Priestess, she has a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, and a Master’s in Education with graduate-level course work in Education Technology.
“I love to teach and pass on knowledge,” Williams said. “This position gives me a chance to help create a knowledge base and uphold a standard of knowledge for Wiccan Clergy.”
Williams began teaching at the Seminary in 2011. The first classes she taught were called “Born a Witch” and “Sacred Dance,” which were perfect considering she is both a history buff and a professional Belly Dancer and teacher.
Belladonna LaVeau, the previous Dean of the School since 2006, previously ran her own school, WISE.
“I am so excited for Kara,” LaVeau said. “She is going to do a fabulous job bringing this school to the next level. And a paid, full-time Dean? This is a first for Wicca and is going to legitimize Wicca as a world religion even more so.”
Originally founded in 1996, WSTS is a Ministry Degree-granting institution based in Washington State. Currently, WSTS offers degrees: Associate of Ministry (AM); Bachelor of Ministry (BM); Master of Ministry (MM); and Doctor of Ministry (DM).
Williams’ long-term goals for the school moving forward include expanding courses and types of degrees, growing with and utilizing new technologies, and setting up an Accreditation Body for Wiccan Colleges.
“One of the big, long-term goals we have is to help establish an Accreditation Body for Wicca. Hiring a full-time employee is an important step for moving in that direction.”
Being a legal, degree-granting institution is not the same as accreditation. Accreditation is done by a separate non-profit organization made up of many legal degree granting institutions. Currently, Wicca does not have enough legal degree granting institutions to create an accrediting board.
As more groups create Wiccan Institutions of higher education, an Accreditation Board will be a huge asset to Wiccan Seminaries’ legitimacy.
